Who we are

The Oromo Community Association of Michigan(OCAM) was established in 1993 and adopted its constitution in 2008 as a voluntary, nonprofit organization to preserve Oromo heritage, foster community well-being, and support Oromo individuals and families in Michigan.

The Oromo Community Association of Michigan(OCAM) was established as a mutual assistance organization to support Oromo immigrants in Michigan. It provides essential resources, cultural preservation, and community development programs to help members integrate while maintaining their heritage.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, OCAM operates under U.S. laws that allow tax-exempt status for charitable and community-focused organizations.

The Oromo Community Association of Michigan(OCAM) is more than just an organization—it is a home away from home for Oromo individuals and families seeking connection, support, and empowerment. Rooted in the rich heritage of the Oromo people, OCAM is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving culture, fostering unity, and uplifting its members across Michigan.

The Oromo people, originally from East Africa, have a deep and resilient history, a vibrant cultural identity, and a strong tradition of communal support. OCAM was founded to help Oromo immigrants and refugees successfully transition into American life while keeping their language, traditions, and values alive.

At OCAM, we believe in the power of communitywhere individuals can find resources, social networks, and opportunities for both personal and professional growth. Through cultural events, educational programs, advocacy efforts, and social support, OCAM plays a vital role in strengthening the presence and impact of the Oromo people in Michigan.

Currently, our community has over 2800 members, including children, women, and men, across the state of Michigan.

Additionally, the Oromo Community Association of  Michigan has its own Bylaws and Constitution, established in 2008, which govern its structure, operations, and guiding principles.
